Money isn’t everything and maybe greed isn’t good, but most people still measure success in their careers by how high their salary is and whether it continues to rise over the years as they move up in importance within their field. It used to be that a long career could be based on experience and loyalty to a specific company . If a worker stayed in a corporation long enough, he or she would advance up the promotion ladder, earning larger and larger salaries and eventually receiving regular bonuses and perks.
That business model is all but gone. The evolution of the global economy and the willingness of workers to transfer to other offices or switch employers all together has made the job market a much more fluid environment. It is no longer guaranteed that companies will promote from within, especially if there are educated and experienced candidates from the outside willing to join the organization. This is one of the main reasons that education, especially advanced degrees, has become so important in achieving career advancement and the financial success that comes with it.
Sure, there are some bootstrap success stories out there. People who never finished college and end up running some of the world’s largest companies. These individuals remain the exception. Even in the traditionally independent environment of Wall Street stock trades and investment management, people are taking the time to earn their masters in finance online in order to qualify for promotions or prepare themselves to switch to a different firm.This applies to fields as diverse as law enforcement, advertising, and education. Getting a masters or doctorate can unlock better career opportunities and much higher salaries.
