National Parks are the Jewel of the Canadian Rockies

Posted by Ann on June 6, 2011

North America is known for its rugged wilderness and both the United States and Canada have taken great strides in protecting some of that wilderness from development. Travelers who want to explore the wild beauty of the Canadian Rockies will find that there are several national parks around the town of Banff Alberta that both protect the natural environment and allow visitors to experience the stunning sights and sounds of the region.

The main parks in the region are Banff National Park, Yoho National Park, Jasper National Park and Glacier National Park . They encompass mountains, forests, lakes, hot springs, glaciers, and lots of wildlife. There are several small towns and villages in the area that provide lodging, shopping and dining for visitors to the parks.

Hiking is perhaps the most popular way of exploring the parks. Visitors can also tour the lakes by boat or canoe and they can explore designated trails on horseback or bicycle. There are scenic drives through mountain passes and along glacier highways as well as trails and loops that are ideal for wildlife watching. In recent years companies have started offering helicopter and airplane tours of the region to give visitors a different view of the area.

A Trip to Tusayan

Posted by Ann on April 5, 2011

Few people have heard of the town of Tusayan . As of 2010 it is officially the smallest incorporated town in the state of Arizona. Prior to that it was an unincorporated village. Those that have heard of it think of it as an extension of the Grand Canyon, since it is located only a few miles from the South entrance to Grand Canyon National Park and derives almost its entire economy from visitors to the park.

Located in Coconino County, the 2000 census indicated that Tusayan had a population of 562. It is the area of the town that makes it the state’s smallest, measuring a mere .225 square miles or 144 acres. It is the home of the Grand Canyon National Park Airport , which serves two airlines, both of which offer sightseeing tours of the Canyon and surrounding areas.

A vast majority of the visitors staying in Tusayan hotels are there to visit the Grand Canyon. The town offers the usual array of stores, hotels, and restaurants that is expected at a tourist resort. It is also located within easy driving distance of Flagstaff and Sedona as well as Lake Powell and Las Vegas, making it a good home base for travelers who want to explore the region.

Overseas Health Insurance Options

Posted by Ann on February 14, 2011

Overseas trips bring a lot of decisions and preparations. Health insurance should be a priority to anyone making overseas travel plans, but, unfortunately, many people don’t see the value of this type of insurance. The dangers of international travel aren’t limited to lost luggage, canceled flights , or risk of terrorism. Anyone can break an arm, get in a car accident, or come down with a serious virus or bacterial infection without warning. If that happens to someone while they are overseas, they will be forced to pay the costs out of pocket or be at the mercy of the charitable policies of a given country — unless they have visitor health insurance of some kind.

There are a variety of options available when choosing overseas health insurance. The most common solution is a global health insurance plan that provides coverage in almost any country in the world. These policies usually include provisions for emergency treatment, medical evacuation , and prescription replacement (including glasses, hearing aids, and other medical equipment). Those planning long-term trips can get policies that include preventative care and cover pre-existing conditions.

If a trip is limited in geographical scope, it is possible to get insurance for one country, such as India, or a region, such as Asia. These plans will be targeted to the health care system of that region. The options are nearly limitless. For example, Bajaj Allianz travel insurance offers specialized plans for senior citizens, for families, for those taking multiple trips in a single year as well as more generic plans and region-specific plans.

Popular Galleries and Architectural Landmarks of Montreal

Posted by Ann on October 8, 2010

Montreal is one of the most popular cities in Canada for foreign tourists to visit. It has also been recognized, repeatedly, as being one of the most livable and beautiful cities in the world. This is due to a lot of reasons, and one is the enormous welcoming and friendly nature of the city atmosphere, though it is also largely due to the fact that Montreal is just plain beautiful. The cityscape is incredible and the architecture represents a diverse history of styles and genres. A large number of the city’s buildings also serve as some of its historic landmarks. There are also a number of acclaimed cultural attractions.

There is plenty to do and see for the guests in one of the Montreal hotels . Having a strong traditional basis in French culture and language, there are some fine French restaurants. And while it seems like you couldn’t go wrong with anything you choose to do in this great city there are some things that are at the top of many tourists’ list and are considered to be must see attractions. The Notre Dame Basillica is one of the most popular places to visit and is the city’s oldest Catholic church. The enormous amount of stained glass is one of the inviting features of this building that dates from 1656. There are a number of museums and galleries in the city and L’atelier de sculpture du Village has some of the most beautiful statues and sculptures in the city. These are just a couple of the must see location in Montreal, and the city is full of them.

Fort Lauderdale’s Tropical Climate

Posted by Ann on October 3, 2010

One of the reasons Ft. Lauderdale draws so many tourists and visitors every year is the city’s spectacular climate. Located just north of the Tropic of Cancer , also known as the Venice of America, features a topical monsoon climate with muggy, humid, and hot summers.

Summer is also the city’s wet season, when most of the rain falls. Fort Lauderdale receives an annual rainfall of slightly more than 63 inches, making it one of the wettest cities in the country. While that sounds like a lot of rainy days, Fort Lauderdale is actually mostly sunny. Monsoon rains pour down in tropical deluges from May to September. Temps range in the high 80s and low 90s with high humidity. However, if a summer storm blows through in the afternoon, it usually takes the humidity with it, leaving a cool and beautiful summer evening and night.

It’s the rest of the year that attracts the most beach lovers to the area’s best hotels. Ft Lauderdale has a significantly lower humidity once the monsoons are over and the winter month’s offer an average daily high temperature of 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Nightime temperatures however around 59 degrees Fahrenheit and rarely fall below 40F.

Fort Lauderdale Art

Posted by Ann on September 24, 2010

The 23rd annual Las Olas Art Fair will be held in Fort Lauderdale on October 23rd & 24th. Over 200 regional, national, and international artists and craftsmen will display their works, turning Las Olas into an outdoor gallery. Thousands of spectators are expected to gather at Fort Lauderdale hotels to attend the event, which is ranked as one of the top 100 art festivals in the US.

The Las Olas Art Fair is a juried event, which means that judges carefully select the participants from hundreds of applicants. This ensures only the highest quality original artwork will be on display. The fair requires that all artists remain at the event throughout the weekend, which gives visitors the opportunity to mix with the artists, asking questions, learning about inspirations, and even commissioning specific works. At many large festivals, art lovers only get to view and purchase the art, and perhaps attend a lecture or panel discussion featuring the artists themselves. With artworks priced from $15 to $20,000 for large scale sculpture, there truly is something for art lovers of all walks of life.

Las Olas Boulevard is known as the heart of Fort Lauderdale with shopping, restaurants, spas, fashion, and plenty of art galleries and studios.

Boston BLT

Posted by Ann on September 21, 2010

In a city as old and diverse as Boston, anyone visiting can find pretty much anything they’re looking for. With an enormous range of live art, from theatre to music and dance, every evening can easily be filled with sublime performances. The only other thing missing from the picture, besides time in a luxury Boston hotel would be the meal before or after the show. And Boston is perfectly suited to accommodate every taste.

There are choices for nearly any kind of cuisine in the world, and the mix of cultures here means that there are generations of expertise running through the recipes. Enough so that it’s possible to get into arguments about who serves the best BLT in Boston. This is great news for chowhounds, because there are choices for everything.

In the BLT realm, however, there seems to be two places that consistently rank on the people’s choices lists. Flour Bakery and Shay’s Pub and Wine Bar couldn’t be more different, and both offer a sandwich worth traveling for. The Shay’s version is the old school BLT, served up on toasted white bread, with nothing extra. At Flour, the “l” becomes arugula, and the bacon is applewood-smoked, and there are other gourmet touches. It all is enough to make one love the city so much that it almost feels like home.

Marc Chagall Stained Glass Windows in Zurich

Posted by Ann on August 28, 2010

Zurich is an amazing and beautiful city and the tourists who visit it often have a difficult time deciding where they should visit first. One of the most amazing features of the city is its architecture, and some of these great historic buildings also feature spectacular artwork as part of their features. The Fraumunster church, which means our lady’s minster, is one of these and is also one of the great historic buildings of the city. It was built prior to the year 900 and features a choir that dates from the Romanesque period. The stained class choir windows were designed by artist Marc Chagall . During its latest renovation a visitor’s scaffolding was added that allows from some of the most spectacular panoramic views of Zurich you can find anywhere.

Chagall designed the five large stained glass windows in the abbey. Each of these has a dominant color, one of the factors that was prominent to his work, and also depicts a Christian story. The prophets are the subject of one and it depicts the ascent of Elijah. Jacob and his dreams of heaven are the theme if another. Christ and various aspects of his life are a third. The final two windows represent the law and depict Moses looking down on the suffering of his people and Zion, with the triumph and angel that are representative of the end of the world. Chagall was extremely well known and respected for his paintings, and also created a number of great stained glass work. He has windows in churches and buildings in various places around the world. They were installed in Fraumunster in 1970. These are part of the reason the church is a favorite place to visit for the guests in the Zurich hotels .

Looking for Books in Florence

Posted by Ann on August 25, 2010

Traveling through the world’s great cities gives a sense of exhilaration and excitement, even in the deep throes of jet lag. There’s something exquisite about touching the cornerstones of contemporary civilization. The great contributions to world art and culinary culture from Florence, Italy are not just things that exist in a distant past, but are palpable in the present. New artists and intellectuals come to the city every day, ready to start or continue careers in following the chaotic muses of inspiration, and the energy is contagious. It’s a rare gift to have the chance to spend time in a tourist house , getting in touch with the local culture, and resting for the adventures ahead.

For book lovers, Florence is also something of a paradise. The old cities in Europe all hold mysterious possibilities for finding the perfect volume of a favorite book. There’s also the chance of finding an early edition of an old classic somewhere in the dusty shelves of an antiquarian bookshop . While Florence has plenty of offerings for new literature and non-fiction in Italian, and often other languages, the old book shops like La Cite Libreria offer the sense of being in a treasure house.

One can spend one’s nights daydreaming in Florence hotels about the volumes to be perused by day, and an adventure in a bookstore can inevitably lead to conversations with the locals about some of the other best things to see and do in a remarkable place.

Phoenix, Arizona is an incredible city with a diverse population and dynamic cultural atmosphere. It is located in the heart of the state and it is also the capital. It is one of the largest cities in the country and it is frequently referred to as the Valley of the Sun. This refers to the entire metropolitan region, which includes neighboring cities such as Glendale, Tempe, Mesa and Scottsdale. There are numerous cultural attractions located in the downtown region and the beautiful desert landscape, which surrounds the city adds to its dynamic atmosphere.

One of the things that Phoenix is known for is the extreme heat that it experiences through a large portion of the year. Locals like to say that there are only two seasons in Phoenix, summer and summer. However, with the intense heat there are some incredible monsoon storms that bring a vibrancy to the atmosphere that is matched by few other cities in the country.

San Diego Electronic Disturbance

Posted by Ann on July 22, 2010

San Diego has always had a reputation as a town for leisure. Its lovely beaches, and endlessly fascinating tide pools, are a draw for people from all over the world. A weekend in the city at one of the top San Diego hotels can change a life for the better.

Besides all the wonderful things that the ocean and the restaurants can offer, there are also some very daring and innovative artists living and working here. Ricardo Dominguez , who’s still on the faculty at UCSD, has a cv as impressive as it gets. He’s been working for over 20 years in the digital and public realm, and his artistic thrust has been to bridge the two together.

Inspired by the work of the EZLN in Chiapas, he saw correspondences with his own computer-based works and their savvy use of the internet. Utilizing many of their techniques, and borrowing freely from their rhetoric, he has been making very interesting projects that have influence in the global community. He is widely considered to be a pioneer in the digital realm, and it’s one that’s becoming more populated every day by artists who are looking for ways of bridging the gap between the personal and the electronic.

Art and life are closer than they appear, and also worlds apart, but always more complex than a surface can suggest.

Fourth of July in San Diego

Posted by Ann on July 12, 2010

Who wouldn’t want to take an nice vacation in the beautiful Southern California city of San Diego? Well, this writer couldn’t think of a single person and even asked a few friends just to solidify the perspective, without going to the effort of conducting an official survey. So, while it’s not scientific, it is likely to be universally agreed that San Diego is an ideal summer vacation destination. In fact, a small group of my relatives spent the Fourth of July Weekend there, just last week. And I hope that statement doesn’t beg the question of why I wasn’t invited to go along.

My former brother-in-law, his parents, sister and their children spent the weekend there and watched the fireworks on of the beautiful beaches. They all agreed that it was one of the most beautiful and romantic fireworks displays they had witnessed in a long time or even their entire lives. In addition they had a great time and loved their accommodations in one of the best resorts San Diego . And coincidentally, they arrived in the city just end time to experience the closing days of the San Diego County Fair . This was an unexpected surprise though they certainly took advantage of all the great food that was offered and enjoyed the beautiful arts and crafts they saw. And while they had a great time this year, they inspired me to begin planning my trip to San Diego next summer.

London Style

Posted by Ann on June 23, 2010

The city of London is definitely synonymous with style in the culture of the time. It’s always been a far-reaching place, and where once there was empire, now there is a remarkable sense of fashion. Fashion sense, however, was never far from London, and even Shakespeare went on at length to discuss all the latest trends of the day, from all the countries with which England had relationships.

Today, it’s as much about style as it ever was, and the Style Council seems to come to mind when it comes to panache. That’s very likely due to the contributions that Paul Weller has made to culture. He is also very closely linked to style and fashion, and seems to have a particular knack for seeing and setting trends that the world notices. Now in his fifties, he is still as snappy a dresser as there ever was, and his videos entertain as much as they inspire desire to hit the streets of London and go shopping.

Perhaps that might be a bit antithetical to some of his projects from his Style Council days, and it also is slightly askew in terms of his relation to punk rock when he was with the Jam. But Weller has never been one to follow anyone else’s idea of propriety, and prefers to make his own way. It’s a marvelous thing, too, because the world needs new trends, and someone’s got to set them.

His modfather persona is one that evokes a longing to visit the city and see it in style from a stylish hotel London is famous for. There’s no reason not to see the city for oneself, and enjoy all it has to offer. The legacy from 1962 is still running strong, and visionaries like Weller keep pushing it from its fabulous present into an even better future.

Vegas Chapels

Posted by Ann on June 16, 2010

It’s one of the great folk stories in the consciousness of the people of the U.S., to have a friend who got hitched in Las Vegas. It’s a story that has just a couple common themes, and they usually revolve around these. Sudden infatuation and intoxication are usually the ingredients, and they almost always serve as a cautionary tale. A lot of these are probably no more than urban legends, because of the nature of the story, with a friend, or a friend of a friend being the main character.

Not that it can’t happen in Vegas. With so much splendor in its fantastic hotels, Las Vegas can infuse any moment with a whole lot of charm that might not hold up after the oxygen is back to a normal level, and life can be seen in direct light, unhindered with neon. But there are certainly a large number of wedding chapels here, although they do try their best to discourage the severely inebriated from making a move that’s legal, and at least a little bit permanent.

The history of chapels in the city is actually a delightful one, and it does speak to a honeymoon spirit, and one that can sometimes give blessings to true love. The Wee Kirk o’the Heather just might be the oldest, as it claims to be, having been doing this since 1940. A graduate student should certainly figure out how to turn their stories into a sociology dissertation. Somewhere in the history of these services, stories about a minister dressed as Elvis started circulating, and it may very well have been the stuff of urban legend as well. But when word gets around, and there’s money to be made, supply rises to meet the demand, and now there are several chapels in town that can do the Elvis wedding , and even the Wee Kirk offers a special package for lovers enamored with the King as much as each other.

An Easy Guide for Attending the Seattle Opera

Posted by Ann on June 9, 2010

When you’re visiting Seattle, you must go to the Seattle Opera, and if you’ve never attended an opera before, here are a few tips, like what to wear or what time should you arrive, all of which will make your first time at the opera a memorable, enjoyable experience, instead of a miserable, embarrassing or boring experience.

Usually it is the etiquette and outfits that put people off from attending the opera, but most are simply common sense, just like how every baseball fan knows what to do during the seventh-inning stretch, going to the opera has it’s own traditions, such as being on time, latecomers are not allowed to take their seat if the performance has started, they will be seated during an intermission. The talent at the Seattle Opera is quite exceptional and the musicians are topnotch, but all is done without amplification, and some of the most memorable and dramatic moments in opera are usually the quietest, so keep those candy wrappers inside your purse, or unwrap the cough-drops before the performance. Talking, even whispering to your companion is not even a consideration, and by all means fiddling with your program is out of the question.

The only time enthusiastic displays of appreciation are welcome is after a well-executed aria. Basically, the experience of the audience will let you know when it’s time to shout ‘Bravo!’ Opera used to be patronized by royalty, but today’s opera is for all people to enjoy. In these modern times and especially in Seattle, you’ll see opera-goers wearing everything from Ball Gowns to Birkenstocks shoes. So feel free to dress-up for the night, or dress-down and be comfortable, because when it comes to opera, almost anything, but the most casual wear is appropriate.

Here is a list of the most common sense reminders before entering the theater: turn-off all cell phones, watch alarms, make sure the material of the opera is appropriate if you are bringing children. There’s no food or drink allowed in the theater, no humming along with the music or beating time to the music. Don’t leave just before the end of the opera in order to ‘beat’ the traffic; you might consider sticking around for the free post-performance Q & A session, which is always enlightening.

And most of all, don’t worry if you don’t know the language the opera is in usually German, Italian or French, because there is an English captions board above the stage, so this way anyone, from any walk of life can thoroughly enjoy a night at the opera. If you’re from another country and staying at a boutique hotel, Seattle USA opera is still a ‘must see’ event.

Singapore’s Observatory

Posted by Ann on May 31, 2010

In the realm of progressive rock, it can be a very hit-and-miss experience. Where some groups are occasionally interesting, there are many out there who seem to like the title progressive only because they’re not sure what they’re doing. When something hits, however, it can leave a deep impression, and remind music lovers why they come out to see shows in the first place. In a place where the music industry is as advanced as the hospitality industry, where a Singapore hotel promises as much style as substance, the songs live up to high expectations.

It’s hard to say why the expectations for music are so high here. It could be that the city-state’s reputation as something of a cultural mecca lately is starting to take hold in international realms. It could also be that the education system here is very good, and anyone who’s playing music also has a very strong background in all of the things that make music interesting. The mathematical layering of Singapore’s The Observatory is very tight, but it never sounds like science when they play, because it seems to come from a place of pure inspiration, and some very highly-evolved instincts.

The six-member band are a very deft ensemble, and all of the players have musical pedigrees that cover the map, from classical training to degrees in economics and film. The experience in musical forms certainly shows in their work, evoking an inevitable comparison to the stylings of the U.K.’s Radiohead . It may be an apt comparison in other ways, too, as there is a dark broodiness here that is able to transform consciousness. They rarely have a drum sound in their work, but the implicit rhythms are so extraordinary that no one doubts for a moment that the listener is in good hands.

Bands that play computers more than instruments sometimes inspire raised eyebrows, unless they know their computers very well. The Observatory know the possibility of their mac laptops so well that they can make them sing to the point where everyone can forget where they are and come along for an exhilarating ride.

Swim With Dolphins and Bay of Pigs Museum in Miami

Posted by Ann on May 27, 2010

There is never a loss of ideas for things to do while you’re visiting Miami, Florida. However, sometimes tourists can be overwhelmed by the amount of cultural attractions and entertainment options, rather than with the task of finding something to do. And while it’s impossible to forget the beaches or miss the fact you’re experiencing beautiful weather, there are endless other attractions, landmarks and events taking place that you will not want to let slip your mind or vacation agenda. It’s always a good idea to keep a list of essential places to visit in your Miami hotel room , which can be an excellent reminder of attractions that could otherwise get lost in the mix.

One of the great opportunities for things to do in Miami is associated with the beaches and marine life. Of course much of the city’s culture is, though swimming with dolphins is not only a unique and once in a lifetime experience, it is also extremely educational and encourages respect and appreciation for this species as well as other marine life and environmental preservation. There are at least two different establishments that offer guests the chance to swim with dolphins and this is certainly something you will not want to pass up. The Theatre of the Sea and the Miami Seaquarium are two known places to enjoy this activity.

There are many different tours available to explore the city of Miami and gain a quality introduction to its many offerings. Something that special you might want to explore is a helicopter tour of the city, which would include fabulous views of the skyline and coast. Another great thing to do in the city is to explore one or more of its quality museums. The Bay of Pigs Museum is a perfect example of the local respect for history. There are numerous interesting memoirs, artifacts and secret photos taken by the CIA during the Cold War era that included the famous Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Missile Crisis and Operation Mongoose.

Paris has a pull on people. In contemporary English-speaking culture, it has an aura of romance and the finer things in life. While there may be sides of the city that are decidedly unromantic, and speak more to the decadents like Baudelaire than the seductions of Chevalier, the aura is still very much intact. A hotel in Paris has an appeal to most anyone, and whether it’s couples on their honeymoon, or celebrating a golden anniversary, or even someone traveling alone, there is mystery inherent in the journey.

There are some places that have more complicated relationships with the city, with mutual histories that speak to a series of intertwined connections that continue to grow and change shape and form. Poland in particular has had a fascinating relationship with the city, and the countries are connected by a vast network of forces. Part of the connection has to do with the War, which only served to bring them closer in complicated ways. Today, there are a pretty substantial number of Polish residents in France, and in Paris, this influence is seen in the art.

The cultures have been mutually influencing each other for two centuries, but the avant garde had a profound effect on their mutual and individual developments. It may seem curious at first to wonder how Tadeusz Kantor ‘s theatre became so popular here, enough so that some of his major productions, the Dead Class and Today is my birthday…, were embraced by the Parisienne art crowds.

His work developed throughout the 20th century, and is a fairly uncanny barometer for all of the major art movements there. Born in 1915 when Dada was slouching toward Bethlehem, and learning to speak sentences when Surrealism was beginning, he was the logical inheritor of a number of traditions. By the time he was in his 20s, and thinking of visual art as a vocation, he was living in Paris and this is the moment when the histories start to break open and really speak to each other.

Art becomes an accusation, and performance starts to lurk in the background, as a means of articulating the charges during a dark time. Neither Paris nor Krakow would ever be the same.

Posted by Ann on April 19, 2010

If you are in New York City for the weekend, you don’t have to go far from one of the New York hotel Suites to find a Greenmarket; there are 8 around the Manhattan area. They vary with the days they are open and with what they specialize in as far as fresh produce goes.

The 97th Street Greenmarket is located on W 97th and Columbus and they are only open on Fridays from 8am to 2pm. 97th Street offers a unique opportunity to support local farmers while you shop in the shadow of a billion dollar corporation, Whole Foods, which has just moved in and is less than 500 feet away. The 97th Street Greenmarket sells meat, produce, dairy and plants at very reasonable prices.

Saturdays, you’ll be able to visit five greenmarkets; Union Square Greenmarket, the city’s flagship Greenmarket , customers not only have access to homegrown produce, meats, pretzels, cheese, jams and honey, but a chance to meet the local farmers, bakers and harvesters behind them – it’s open from 8am to 6pm and is located at 17th Street at Broadway; Inwood Greenmarket, represents 5 different farms where you can get the freshest produce, seafood, cheese, wine, baked good and the best turkey sausages, they are open from 8am to 3pm and located on Isham Street between Seaman and Cooper; Fort Greene Greenmarket, is a great open-air local produce market, but just adjacent to the greenmarket is the Artisan Market, which is perfect if you are looking for more than produce, open from 8am to 3pm and is located at Washington Park at DeKalb; McCarren Park Greenmarket, is part of the city’s green market program affording a quality, reasonably priced alternative to bland, expensive supermarket fare and are open from 8am to 2pm and is located at Union between Driggs and N12th Street, Greenpoint.

New York Doll: Elina Zavala

Posted by Ann on April 1, 2010

New York is a construction. It’s a thing, a metaphor, and an inkling of an idea, and it gets created fresh every single day. There are vast machines at work here, financial, creative, and political, but the most powerful surely is the financial. At least, from the outside, that’s how it would seem, but anyone who’s spent time here has that uneasy sense that it’s more a construction of the people who live here, which suggests that some of this is in our control.

That’s a lot of responsibility. It also makes room a lot of freedom, because it means that actions and thoughts might actually matter. As the days progress, the things that humans do always have the potential to make changes for the better. This might be why we love to see art that turns our heads, because it might have an effect on the world at large.

We also like to see beautiful buildings, wonderful meals, and gorgeous hotels , and New York has plenty of these, offering plenty of wonderful touches to make a visit here a memorable and splendid adventure. Part of the adventure, however, is in being in a city composed of intensely creative people who are making them selves up as they go along, and up and coming stars like Elina Zavala is taking an active part in her own creation, and the results are rather stunning.

Some of her first work in the city was with John Caswell’s excellent Progressive Theatre Project where his play Shots offered heady theatre with a very powerful visual appeal, creating an absurd world gone out of control. She was one of the magnificent actors in the original production, giving her mechanical characters a very intelligent fire.

It’s the kind of fire that can turn someone to salt if you turn around too soon, but with her, you have no choice but to turn. The performances are so extraordinary, and the fire burns so clean, that it leaves the fingers burning with the memory of birth, and the responsibility of creation.

There are Better Places than Wineries in Napa

Posted by Ann on March 25, 2010

After leaving Yosemite, My husband and I drove to Napa and checked into one of the Napa luxury hotels . We thought it would be a good idea to clean-up first, shower and shave, rather than go through some wineries all dirty and stinky from our week long camping trip in Yosemite. At least the staff at our hotel appreciated the difference when we came back down all sparkling clean and smelling good!

Unfortunately, we didn’t know about how most of the wineries only offer tours in the morning and in the early afternoon. So, we found this great vegetarian restaurant called Ubuntu , but the place was more than a restaurant, it was a kind of a community oriented organization promoting healthy eating. The meals are made from their biodynamic garden located on the restaurants property. Plus, they have a vineyard, hold workshops and have a yoga studio! Ubuntu celebrates using garden fresh ingredients and the menu lists the current crop; the head chef coordinates with the head gardner about the harvest for the day.

I ordered the caramelized Napa sunchoke and Fuji apple chowder, malted milk, spring onion and cocoa nib salad. My husband ordered the rustic rancho gordo yellow eye bean stew with rosemary, torn bread, chili and slow-cooked cauliflower leaves. Both dishes were exquisite, refreshing, and very, very fresh. We don’t think we’ve ever been so delighted as we were with our meals. Absolutely delicious.

To top of our wonderful meals, we ordered dessert. I had the tcho bittersweet chocolate terrine, which came with pear, bitter caramel-lavender ice cream and pinenuts. My husband ordered the Meyer lemon rice pudding with huckleberry, shipped thyme and kettle corn. If we weren’t in heaven after dinner, we certainly made it there with the dessert! We gave our compliments to the chef and the staff.

Ubuntu has a nice relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to stay and never leave. But leave we did to get a good nights sleep, in order to wake up early and take in some tours at the wineries, but we seriously doubted that they could top our experience at Ubuntu.

Miami Counts!

Posted by Ann on March 18, 2010

There has never been a lack of need for funding for schools and community programs. It is easy to see what many neighborhoods are lacking and how the funds should be spent. This year is the year for change. The census 2010 is here and it is in our hands. Many communities have a history of non participation in the census, namely those of a large immigrant or population, and retirees. The Census has been reaching out to these communities and promoting awareness of the importance of the census.

In Miami, FL, they have posted an article on their website encouraging community members to be counted . Retirees are a hard to count population in Florida because many have two homes. Miami is known for its influx of immigrants, celebrities, and vacationers. Many people come to Miami and stay only a few months out of the year vacationing in hotels. Every person can chooses which address they would like to be counted for if they have more than one place in which they reside. The census asks that you use the address you are at for most of the year, or the address you are at the time of the Census, April 2010.

For many communities that have grown significantly in the past ten years, it is imperative for their continued funding that they participate with the census. Many allocations, such as bus routes, school buses, Libraries, hospitals, etc.., depend on the information gathered from the Census.

The Census reports that these two hard to count populations in Miami are hard to count for very different reasons. Retiree communities do not wish to be bothered and feel like the have no need to participate. Immigrant communities do not participate out of fear. Many are undocumented and either unaware that they can participate, or afraid of giving up their status. There have been many immigration raids linked to the Census leaking information. They are trying hard to build trust within these communities and repair a bad reputation.
