Bondi Beach in Australia is now a popular destination for tourists, and surfers. The name comes from the aboriginal language and signifies the surf, as water breaking over the rocks, or the noise that is created when the ocean hits the shore. The beach was made public in the mid to late 1,800′s. The city council tried for years to make this beach in Australia a reserve, therefore limiting the access of it to the public. The beach was finally open to surfers and sunbathers in 1882. Buses had been making regular runs to the beach for about thirty years at that time, and with the opening of the beach to the public, they began to transport those from the outskirts of Sydney. Before that, people had to make their way on foot, or bicycle, or on horseback. Private bus drivers took it upon themselves to provide hourly service between the large city and the beach. The State took control of the transit system in 1933 and within a year there was regulated bus transport to the beach which ran on the hour.

Now, in 2009, the beach has become more popular than ever, with the luxury hotel Australia businessmen and architects have developed over the years in Bondi, travelers and tourists have easy access, however the locals are still trying to find the best and most cost effective ways to get there. There was a tram that ran during the beginning of the 1,900′s between the beach and Sydney, but that was dismantled by 1960. The beach has been becoming increasingly more popular, well–since the ’20′s, which had on some days more than one thousands cars looking for a space to park.
Time limits and fees were introduced in many of the parking lots, and the buses now run throughout the hour. However, most residents are wanting the trams back. And soon, it looks as though Sydney may be required to build a light rail system. This would open up space at the beach, and bring more to it as the aggravation at finding a parking space may contribute to some just choosing to either stay at home or simply to go some where else.

In April, traveling around the city streets of Singapore will become more cost effective, more ‘green’ and a bit more quiet as the new electric scooters will go on the market. The leading maker of the scooters, Zeco , estimates that by the end of 2009, more that seven hundred and fifty will be cruising around the city streets, without a sound. Much like the hybrid cars, the scooters have no gears and thus no vibrations, and thus a reduction in the noise pollution. Just one positive aspect of these vehicles. While the scooters, which top speed is just about 60 mph, will be banned from the expressways during their first year, the Department of Transportation will review that ban next year. So for now, the smaller city streets will be the only place legal for driving the scooters. Which is just fine for those consumers looking for options.

The scooters will need to be charged after every 150 miles traveled, and the charge of the battery takes about two hours. This will end up costing the owners of the vehicles, just around sixty dollars a year. In the United States, most people have trouble making sixty dollars spent at the gas pumps last throughout the week. Aside from the cost, most people in Singapore have become environmentally aware, have been for some time actually. The government provides rebates for those business installing solar panels and water conservation devices, and this is no different. Those purchasing the scooters will receive rebates up to five hundred dollars. Three different companies have jumped in to support, by installing ‘green lot’ sections in their parking lots, equipped with battery chargers that are free to the public for the use of recharging the scooters. The largest of the companies and the first to sign on to provide this is the Swedish based company, Ikea. Two stores in Singapore have already completed their lots and the vehicles are not even for sale yet. Soon, some of the best Singapore hotels, the restaurants and many buildings in the downtown business district will be equipped with such accommodations. Making this not only the ‘green’ thing to do, and the inexpensive mode of travel, but quite convenient as well.

New York City is the most popular tourist destination in the United States. As such, millions of people fly in and out of New York for business, pleasure, family, and other reasons every day. The city is serviced by three international airports, though one of them is actually located outside the city proper. Newark Liberty Airport is located in New Jersey. The other two airports are La Guardia and John F. Kennedy Airport, usually referred to as JFK.

The oldest of the three airports is Newark Liberty Airport. It’s location in New Jersey is only fifteen miles from mid-town Manhattan which makes it the ideal airport to reach not only New Jersey and Manhattan, but also Staten Island. Newark was the first commercial airport to be built in the United States and the second in the entire world. Finished in 1928, it was the primary New York airport until JFK was built.

LaGuardia Airport began life as the Glenn H. Curtiss Airport and was later known as the North Beach Airport and the New York Municipal Airport before being renamed for former mayer Fiorello H. La Guardia who campaigned hard to get New York its first international airport. Although it is an international airport, it handles most of the domestic flights and transfers for the city. It is located in Queens, but is only eight miles from Manhattan.

John F. Kennedy International Airport was dedicated in 1948. Located on the former site of Idlewild golf course, the airport was commonly known as Idlewild Airport even though its official name was New York International Airport. It became John F. Kennedy International Airport in 1963 in memory of the late president. Located in Queens, JFK is about seventeen miles from Midtown Manhattan and handles 60,000 international passengers every day. It is the main gatewayr for international arrivals in the US and the leading freight gateway as well.

Visitors to New York will find that all three airports give them easy access to the many landmarks, entertainment venues, and other attractions. Business travelers can easily identify the airport that is closest to their destination. There are a number of excellent New York airport hotels in close proximity to all three airfields or visitors can choose to find accomodations within whatever borough they prefer.
