With literally hundreds of thousands of smart phone apps out there, it’s difficult to imagine anyone getting rich off creating them. Sure, some companies are making money off apps, but the most popular apps are the free ones, which is part of the new strategy of making money from indirect sources rather than selling specific items. Give away an app, charge a subscription for the content. That means the company has a steady source of income, but the Android app developer only gets paid once.

This doesn’t mean that there isn’t money to be made from developing smart phone apps. Since most developers are freelance workers, hired to do one job at a time, there’s no reason someone with the right skills couldn’t earn a good second income from being a freelance developer. Anyone with a head for coding and an understanding of the basic elements of an app can learn to program for iPhones, Androids, and even iPads. There are numerous companies and websites available to advertise developer services or search for developer projects.

There’s also a market for developing apps for individual use. Private consumers who want to be able to make their phone do this or that but don’t have the knowledge to do it themselves are hiring app developers for one-off projects. That’s another way to turn app development into a solid sideline. Of course, there’s always the chance that a really good idea will hit and a developer will create a killer app that takes off and makes them a mini-fortune. But it’s best not to count on that and simply plan developing to be a second job.

While the idea of an organization with one leader is still a very strong one, and certainly very useful, the technological age has made it necessary to rethink organizational flow in general. Some of the basic tenets of the top-down structural logic seem helpful, while others seem very outdated, and in need of reconsideration.

The metaphor of a director might be useful in considering how people behave within structures, and it also reveals some issues that are worth attention. The director doesn’t need to know every detail of how these communication flows function, and it could be a case where too much information could disrupt the flow. Several directors, then, with different functions, and different domains, might be a useful way of reconsidering these models.

Wind turbines are machines that convert the energy of the wind into a form that can be used as mechanical and electrical energy.  The harnessing of the wind has been going on for centuries in many different countries through the simple form of the early wind turbine, the windmill.  Sometimes this energy is used to operate machinery such as a grind stone or a pump.  Other times it is converted into electricity.  This form of energy is useful in the continued efforts to combat environmental issues such as the emission of gases such as carbon dioxide as well as the continued struggle against global warming.  This is done so in a way that still allows everyone the conveniences of the modern lifestyle.

There are two different kinds of wind turbines, distinguished apart from each other by the mechanics of the way in which the blades of the turbine rotate.  Those that operate on horizontally based axis are the most common type, however those rotating vertically are used from time to time.  They are also distinguished by their locations, either offshore, on shore or aerial.  More and more frequently the are being used in combination with solar panels as well.  Those of the horizontal type have a generator, and they must face the wind.  Some have sensors which will move the face of the turbine according to the direction in which the wind is blowing at any given time.  These large towers do produce a bit of turbulence.

Those that are located on the down side of the wind, do not need the sensor, but usually have blades that bend with the pressure.  These are less common than those that are built up-wind.  These are designs that were fist developed throughout Europe and usually have four blades per each turbine.  The early versions of this kind of energy production are located throughout the Netherlands, as well as many throughout the United States, and they have been providing this alternative energy supply for hundreds of years.

Illustrating what can happen on a large scale when power grids fail, and companies do not have adequate backup — or those backups fail — a huge data backup incident occurred on the afternoon of August 22, 2006 in Australia, when a problem with Canberra’s power grid caused a Centrelink mainframe to fail. The Canberra grid supplies electricity to much of the ACT (Australian Capital Territory).

Compounding the problem, backup power to the Bruce, Canberra-based datacenter hosting the mainframe, also failed. The outage caused lengthy delays to Centrelink’s processing of welfare payments, and staff had limited access to affected IT systems.

Although the problem was eventually rectified for Centrelink to make the day’s estimated AU$350 million in payments to more than half a million families, Department of Human Services minister Joe Hockey said he was concerned about the wider implications.

“Needless to say that Jeff Whalan, who’s the head of Centrelink, and myself were firstly not impressed, because we assumed that we had proper power backups,” Hockey said.

“And in fact there was an extensive contract to deliver that power backup. So to say that we were impressed at that moment with the services provided would be a massive overstatement,” Hockey said.

ZDNet Australia has learned Cybertrust was responsible for backup power to the facility, which houses computers for a number of government departments.

This incident is on a much larger scale than “normal” power outage/data loss situations, but one must still be prepared for any level of data backup compromise. The car company has been setting up the structure for the conversion to electric powered automobiles in other countries as well, and Singapore is the new kid on the block, the latest country to be added to the list.  Projects of the similar kind have been launched and have become successful in Monaco, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Switzerland and in many of the states in America.  Government organizations for the different countries have offered their full support for this new, and growing, technology.  The goal is the continued expansion of the project, getting as many electric powered cars and trucks on the roads of Singapore as soon as possible.  As every second does count in the concerted effort to protect and to repair the environment.  Other transit systems of Singapore are also doing a part, in increasing bus and train lines, and expanding the hours of those currently in operation.  It is a brand new world, that has its sights setting on fixing this same old world.  It just gets better and more hopeful every moment.
