Attention and Minimizing Injury Risks

Posted by Ann on April 19, 2011

No one is able to live a life that is entirely free of accidents. One of the conditions of living in a world that’s guided by basic physical principles is that accidents can and will happen. While it might be possible to avoid many pitfalls, eventually everyone has an encounter that is almost entirely unavoidable. There may be a very lucky few who are able to somehow manage that charmed life that’s filled with narrow escapes, but even they seem to bump their heads now and then. Then there are those who seem completely accident-prone, always requiring medical attention and the services of a Florida personal injury attorney . They also seem to be part of the exception rather than the rule.

If there is one common denominator in most accidents, however, it is very likely to be related to attention. This is particularly the case when there is more than one party involved. Odds are extremely high that one party had a momentary lapse of attention, where the focus moved somewhere else. While not everyone meditates, it does seem as though people who do practice some form of meditation have a sharper focus on the moment . If one considers that way the brain behaves under meditative states, there are plenty of activities that can produce the same effects. Repetitive movement to rhythmic breathing can all help the mind to focus on the moment, and heightened awareness does indeed decrease the risk for accidents.

Electronic Cigarettes are Great for Quitting Smoking, Without the Need to Quit

Posted by Ann on March 20, 2011

When nicotine patches and gum first arrived on the scene as an aid for smokers to quit the habit, the products were met with enthusiasm and a willingness to try them. And while they did have some success and assisted with the overall withdrawal elements associated with quitting smoking, the one complaint most smokers agreed was the main impediment to the their overall success was the actual activity of smoking, the physical habit itself. With that in mind, the latest smokers’ quitting aid to hit the market, the electronic cigarette, satisfies this essential component and fundamental physical addition behavior, the act of smoking.

With the E-cig , smokers are reporting that they still receive the same overall satisfaction from the activity as what they used to do with actual tobacco cigarettes. And the majority of those who are trying it actually form an immediate preference due to the lack of odor and dirty dingy ashtrays . One of the other benefits of these cigarettes is that they are available in nicotine enhanced and non-nicotine varieties, and this can actually serve as greater support for quitting. Smokers who are actively trying to quit, will frequently start with the nicotine option and as they become used to the new cigarette they can slowly transfer over to the non-nicotine version, which is actually an activity they may not need or want to give up.

Choosing CPAP Equipment

Posted by Ann on December 11, 2010

If you suspect you have sleep apnea, you may wish there was a way to just buy CPAP equipment and treat yourself. Even if this were possible, it would be very dangerous. CPAP machines are specialized medical equipment and using one without a prescription can be very hazardous. They regulate the flow of oxygen to the body, which is a very risky proposition for those without appropriate medical training.

Only a qualified doctor with experience in treating sleep disorders should be trusted to diagnose sleep apnea and prescribe a CPAP machine. They will have the expertise to know exactly what type of machine you need, how to choose a mask that will best suit your specific symptoms, and what settings and additional equipment you need. This is why CPAP suppliers must have a valid prescription before they can sell you equipment.

Much of the work of choosing your CPAP supplies will be done by your doctor. There are, however, some optional accessories that you will be able to choose for yourself. These may include headgear to make the CPAP mask more comfortable and specially designed pillows to make it easier to sleep with the mask and tubing. There are also travel cases and backup equipment that you can purchase if you need to.

Steam Shower Therapy

Posted by Ann on November 24, 2010

A home is a sanctuary from the outside world. This is why so many people fill their homes with comforting and relaxing items and decor. They create an environment that helps them unwind, rest, and rejuvenate before returning to their jobs and other activities. Some home owners have learned that certain activities are good not only for their peace of mind, but have therapeutic effects on their bodies as well.

One such activity is taking a steam shower . As more and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of steam – beyond relaxation – more and more of the them are installing steam showers in their homes. With most installations running around $2500, it’s not really a luxury item, esp. when the savings in water consumption over time are calculated.

The actual therapeutic benefits of a steam shower are many. The most obvious is the reduction of muscle and joint stiffness and enhancing skin tone. Steam is also a good way to sweat out toxins and it’s said that it helps destroy pathogens as well. It is great for sinusitis, asthma, and bronchitis as well as other respiratory ailments and allergies. A steam shower also stimulates the body’s immune system and improves circulation.

How to Fall Asleep During the Day

Posted by Ann on March 28, 2010

These economic times call for many people to take on extra work where ever they can find it. For some people that is the night shift somewhere, which will mean that for some period of time they will have to be sleeping in the day. If you aren’t part of the one percent of people who are genetically nocturnal, this may come as a problem for you. There are a number of ways to get better sleep in the day however, and one of the best ways is to invest in some proper window coverings.

People who need sleep at night start to develop melatonin when the lights go out. This is a chemical that tells the brain it is time to go to sleep. This is why it can be hard to stay asleep during the day time, or why you sleep uneasily. If you take some a few hours before you are supposed to go to sleep, it will start to raise the levels in the blood stream and will make you more sleepy.

Another way to stimulate the synthesis of this chemical is to find blinds that will block out all light. As soon as you get home, keep all lights off and make sure these blinds are covering the windows. The darkness will start to stimulate melatonin production. If you are relying on blinds to do this however, you should remember to not turn on any lights. Usually it is sunlight that keeps people from producing it, but indoor lighting can be bright enough to keep the body from feeling tired, this can include turning on your television or your computer .

If noise is your problem with sleeping in the day, a good window treatment can help with this also. Of course you will want to make sure that your windows are closed, but you can also get a heavy window coverings that will help nullify the noise. If this is not enough, try using a heavy comforter, which will absorb some of the noise. Also try to put in ear plugs before sleeping, or use noise canceling headphones, which will produce some white noise that will help cancel out noises from inside and outside the house.

Portable Spas and Alpha Waves

Posted by Ann on October 26, 2009

Some of the most interesting studies in stress relief in recent decades has to do with brain waves, and particularly alpha waves.  There is a correlation between different kinds of relaxation and the ability to reach a state of mind that is called alpha.  Portable spas can be a great tool for getting to this state of consciousness, and having one in your own backyard is like having your own relaxation station right in your home.  Finding the right spa for you, of course, is very important.

You’ll want to find something that suits your needs, as well as your own personal sense of style.  Fortunately, there is a wide variety of hot tubs that can fulfill any requirement today.  You can find portable spas that are large enough to swim in, or small enough for intimate evenings for two.  The most popular, of course, are the ones that can accommodate a small group of friends, to allow you to use it for personal use, or to host a backyard barbecue party.  There are also many different options these days that new technologies have made possible, and spas with media centers, music, hdtv, as well as decorative lighting, are widely available.

It doesn’t necessarily matter how many people are over, because you can always get to a lovely state of relaxation, even among friends.  Spas have wonderful effects on the whole body, and you can get most of the benefits whether you are consciously trying to relax or not.  It is better, however, to spend some time every day focusing on doing nothing, and being in a hot tub can help.  Alpha waves come when you are at a state of calm that’s not quite meditation, and the brain registers this as the state that’s closest to dreaming.  It’s a very pleasant state of mind to be in, and it helps to unblock creativity, emotional health, as well as the simple joy of living.  A spa can be an excellent aid toward this, and with a little time and practice, you can get there in no time, and linger longer in that place that’s so close to dreaming.

Extreme Heroin Use in Russia

Posted by Ann on September 24, 2009

The citizens of Russia and the former Soviet Union have struggled for centuries, whether through extreme poverty, war, or dictatorship.  However, in more recent years, specifically the last decade, they have been fighting a new battle—a battle against drugs.  Each year the number of number of Russians using drugs, especially heroin, increases dramatically.  Nearly 78,000 in 2007.  That is nearly ten times the number of users a decade ago. This extreme rise is due in large part to the nearly invisible border between Russia and Asia, allowing nearly unregulated drug trafficking.

One of largest imported drugs is heroin from Afghanistan, where farmers have grown enough opium poppy crops to last the world two years.  The Bush administration began eradicating the crops but many who opposed the action believed that by taking away their crops, and livelihood, the farmers would be pushed into the hands of the insurgents.  The Obama administration has gone a different route; attempting to shutdown opium production and cultivate new crops, such as wheat.  Russia, however, does not feel that is enough – only complete destruction of the crops preferably by air will satisfy.  While the amount produced in Afghanistan has decreased, they are still producing more than the world would ever need.

To top it off, Russia has recently come under an epidemic of HIV/AIDS due to the excessive intravenous drug use.  Despite the desperate attempts of Russian drug enforcement official, Viktor P. Ivanov, negotiations are moving slowly.  In the meantime, Russian healthcare and addiction treatment leaves much do be desired for those suffering from addiction.  While there are addiction treatment center, admission is severely restricted.  Even those who are admitted do receive the proper therapies and dual diagnosis treatments that many faced with addiction need.  Unfortunately many are left to fend for themselves, and with billions of rubles being lost each year and tens of thousands of deaths, Russia can’t wait much longer.

Exercise and Hot Tubs Reduce Stress

Posted by Ann on September 21, 2009

One of the growing popular trends with backyard hot tubs is to incorporate an exercise workout area into the design. It can be extremely rewarding and pleasant to complete one’s workout regime in the comfort of a beautifully landscaped backyard and follow this with a soothing encounter in a personal spa.  Choosehottubsdirect.com provides excellent information on the necessary products and features to make this possible.

One of the standard structural elements is to include a solid deck. For people that love to engage in yoga or tai chi, this can provide a great platform for the pose and movement series associated with both and the calm of the open-air outdoor space is the perfect atmosphere for it. In addition, flat screen televisions are frequently included with the hot tub design, so accessing a recorded exercise program is convenient and easy. Another standard element with many hot tubs is a sound system. This is a great feature for all exercise workout systems as the appropriate background music is a general must for inspiration and general addition to the experience.

Nothing completes the workout like a soothing dip in the hot tub. This is a great way to relax tired muscles and calm over stressed minds. Beginning each day with a series of yoga poses and stretches and a sit in a hot tub is shown to reduce the daily stress level rates in people and provide a greater sense of stability. It also enhances coping skills and the individuals who maintain this habit have reported a greater overall sense of control with their lives. With these factors built into the possibilities with the purchase of a home hot tub, it adds greater dimension and incalculable worth to what is typically perceived as simple entertainment luxury item. It also makes it clear that the benefits of the investment outweigh the slight dip in budgets.

How successful is weight loss surgery?

Posted by Ann on July 9, 2009

Weight loss surgery has revolutionized the way people and the world deal with obesity. With more and more people falling into the obese or morbidly obese category according to their BMI, body mass index, weight loss surgery is sometimes the only option for a person.

But how successful is it? Is it worth it to go under the knife, often putting all of your hopes in dreams into thinking that weight loss surgery will be the ultimate fix and answer to your problems?

The answer is that it does very much depend on the patient. Hopefully, weight loss surgery is being used as a last resort option. Weight loss surgery significantly helps patients with their ability to exercise. Where previously a person may have had no range of motion, they now have the ability to move and therefore, get more exercise.

Success in weight loss surgery is defined as losing about 50 percent of the excess body weight or more, and maintaining that type of level for at least five years.

With the cost of weight loss surgery the hope is that is will be quite successful for the patient. Medical tourism abroad based surgery is becoming increasingly popular. No matter what type of weight loss procedure a patient is looking to have, it can cost much less in a country like Mexico. Gastric sleeve cost is much cheaper in Mexico and lap band surgery abroad comes at much more attainable prices.

Keep in mind, no matter what you decide to do or where you decide to have your surgery you need to be informed about the procedure and possible complications that could accompany it.  Being a well informed patient will make you feel more at ease with the process and that much more excited about the results and what the future holds.

The Benefits of Steam Saunas and Hot Tubs

Posted by Ann on June 30, 2009

It is no secret that hot tubs serve to reduce stress, relieve tension in muscles and the tension in the mind due to every day life.  It eases aches and pains, and will promote healing of sprains or torn ligaments.  What may not be so widely known is that they can help in the recovery of pneumonia and other upper respiratory infections such as influenza, asthma, the common cold and bronchitis.  Hot water be it in hot tubs such as those found at choosehottubsdirect.com, or that in the form of steam in saunas with open the air ways of the lungs and will also get the blood circulating, transport the white blood cells to the areas affected.  This promotes and hastens the healing process, and allows one to simply breathe better.

Those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis feel the increased benefit when combining a soak, with any for of exercise that takes place in the water, be it aerobics or swimming, and a nice long massage.  Joint pain and swelling is relieved and the increase in the flow of the blood, again is beneficial to the ongoing treatment of arthritis.  Some studies have been done on patients that have been part of hydrotherapy sessions in the Dead Sea in Israel.  The sea water has been shown to be even more beneficial, according to studies performed by the NIH, in the Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.  These studies have been relatively small however, and more in depth studies over longer periods of time will be necessary in drawing any conclusive findings.

Regardless, they do report that hydrotherapy is a practice that is low risk, as long as the body is not overly exposed to water that is either too hot or too cold.  They stress the importance of staying hydrated as well, as soaking in a hot tub will cause one to perspire.  Those who will need to consult with their physician before beginning any program are those whose conditions may become worsened, such as in diabetes, or people with injuries which could be made worse by jets that are too powerful.  Those with nerve damage will need to practice the utmost care as it may be difficult for them to feel when the temperature of the water is too hot or cold.  Pregnant women will need to be aware of the temperature as well, as hot water will cause damage to their unborn.  There are many benefits to be gained by soaking in hot tubs, just common sense and knowledge are necessary when decided whether or not it is perfect for any given individual.

Grilling a Turkey

Posted by Ann on June 29, 2009

There is so much versatility with outdoor kitchens that once you start working with them, you’ll wonder how you ever did anything without the grill.  There are an infinite number of new taste combinations that are suddenly available to you.  With a little time, you’ll become knowledgeable in all sorts of cooking techniques that make incredible foods.  You’ll also come to learn that grilling is not just about meat, but also applies to vegetables and fruits, even desserts.  There are unexpected taste combinations in grilling, but also unexpected foods that can be grilled, like the holiday turkey.

It may seem odd to some to consider cooking that large bird in your outdoor kitchen, but a little investigation will reveal that there are many who would never consider anything else.  There is a considerable advantage in grilling a turkey on the barbecue, namely, that it frees up all that space in the kitchen.  But it also makes some unique tastes in the turkey meat, cooks a bird that is always juicy, and, with a little skill, takes less time than the conventional oven.

For most recipes for grilling a turkey, the idea is to use indirect heat.  This method of cooking on the grill uses the heat to surround the turkey, rather than cooking it directly over the red-hot flame.  This helps to cook the meat thoroughly, and to penetrate to the interior of the bird.  It also allows for a slower cooking method that will help to keep the meat thoroughly juicy, and to let the flavors seep deeply into the flesh.  There are different ideas for seasoning, and, although using your great-grandmother’s recipe will always put a smile on everyone’s face, it’s also wise to experiment with new flavors.  Cooking in an outdoor kitchen can be as much about ingenuity as tradition, and a blend of each will have the neighbors wondering how they got to be so lucky to live so close to heaven.

Hot Tub for Sale? Take Advantage

Posted by Ann on June 29, 2009

One thing to consider when one finds a hot tub for sale, is that there are many benefits that will be provided to ones health when one decides to purchase that hot tub.  In this day and age, many people feel they do not have the time to take a long soak in a tub.  Truth is that they may just think they do not have the time, as just fifteen minutes a day, immersed in hot water, will provide the benefits.  In fact, that is the recommended amount of time to spend soaking, just fifteen minutes.  It’s a shame really, because the soothing effects of a bath are something everyone should really take the time out to provide themselves.  Water is a natural healing element.  The effects on the muscles, the joints and the skin are physical effects, just as the effects on the endocrine system and the organs and the nerves.  Hot water will quiet a noisy body.  Cold water by contrast, will invigorate and stimulate the body.  This is the perfect cure for a stressful and hectic lifestyle, nerves are soothed thereby reducing and relieving stress.

The Mayo Clinic performed a study and found that soaking in a hot tub provides one with the benefits of exercise, without the strain and pressure on the heart.  Blood pressure lowers, and the heart rate increases, similar to daily exercise.  The heart will speed up a bit at first, but will then regulate itself and actually slow down.  Blood flow increases, as the pressure drops.  Hot tubs have been proven to be one aspect in curbing insomnia.  One should soak at one hundred and three degrees a couple hours before lying down to sleep.  This may all be a circular process, as hectic lives cause insomnia, hot tubs reduce stress, thereby reducing the incidence of sleepless nights.  A relaxed body, is a body ready for sleep.  Soaking a bit before sleep, also just gives the mind and the body the time to wind down.  Transition from the life of the day, is eased as one is soaking.  As opposed to jumping into the bed the second one gets home.  The weightlessness of the body that the hot water induces, also introduces one to the weightlessness of sleep, easing out of a hard day, into a night filled with sweet dreams and rejuvenation.

Two Puppet Festivals in Singapore

Posted by Ann on February 16, 2009

The public performances included in all puppet festivals around the world, tend to include, aside from the puppet shows themselves…films, classes and workshops, school shows, and, open classes for people, young and old alike, wanting to learn the art of puppetry, wanting to carry on the artist traditions of any given culture and society. Many children in various cities around the world do not have exposure to the performing arts, be it that they live in remote places, or if they are in the city, more and more art programs being cut from public school systems each and every day. These festivals tend to bring the forefront the simple joy of creative energy, and the harnessing of that energy into shows and classes that not only entertain, but are known (as all art forms are known to do) to promote social awareness, promote the integration of various cultures working toward similar goals and promote the necessity for cooperation. These are just a few elements that suffer during times of economic strife and cultural struggle around the world. The Singapore International Puppet Festivals are no different.

One of the festivals started in Africa in 2002. By 2004 the festival was to include twenty to thirty puppeteers from countries such as the USA, Austria, Germany, France and Singapore. The focus of the festival and the classes and workshops being offered was the building of cultural cooperation through theater and art, puppetry. The collaborative effort toured to these various cities, and will tour again in 2009. It is an attempt to heal people who have been living in countries at war with themselves and with each other.

Another known festival, which is more specifically relevant in tradition and the mythology of the particular regions in China, Malaysia, and Singapore is the Hungry Ghost Festival. This festival is to honor the dead who are said to pay visits to living relatives. This happens during the seventh month of the year. Along with preparing extravagant meals to feed the hungry deceased, the ghosts are fed in hopes of assuaging any ill will towards the living. During this time of remembering and honoring with food and meals, Operas are performed, live concerts attended and the puppet shows of the old traditions, Hokkien and Teochews, are performed and attended to by all. Thus carrying on the traditions of a culture celebrating itself and all those who have been a part of it. Many visitors to the festival find accommodation in 5 star Singapore hotels.
