Money isn’t everything and maybe greed isn’t good, but most people still measure success in their careers by how high their salary is and whether it continues to rise over the years as they move up in importance within their field. It used to be that a long career could be based on experience and loyalty to a specific company . If a worker stayed in a corporation long enough, he or she would advance up the promotion ladder, earning larger and larger salaries and eventually receiving regular bonuses and perks.

That business model is all but gone. The evolution of the global economy and the willingness of workers to transfer to other offices or switch employers all together has made the job market a much more fluid environment. It is no longer guaranteed that companies will promote from within, especially if there are educated and experienced candidates from the outside willing to join the organization. This is one of the main reasons that education, especially advanced degrees, has become so important in achieving career advancement and the financial success that comes with it.

Sure, there are some bootstrap success stories out there. People who never finished college and end up running some of the world’s largest companies. These individuals remain the exception. Even in the traditionally independent environment of Wall Street stock trades and investment management, people are taking the time to earn their masters in finance online in order to qualify for promotions or prepare themselves to switch to a different firm.This applies to fields as diverse as law enforcement, advertising, and education. Once a website has been designed and built, there needs to be thorough testing to make sure everything works properly. Opening a site that doesn’t function is the same as holding a grand opening for a store that doesn’t have a working cash register. Businesses should also make sure that they conduct some form of user testing on their site. This will make certain that the site is easy to understand and use by the average web surfer.

The key to getting the most out of Usability Tests is identifying the target demographic to test. It doesn’t matter if the site makes sense to a bunch of designers and programmers who already know everything about the site. It also doesn’t make sense to test the site on senior citizens if the target market for the company’s products is women in their 20s and 30s. Make sure that the test audience is made up of the primary target customers and possibly a few secondary demographics.

The other important consideration in setting up usability testing is understanding the goals of the site. Some sites are trying to sell products while others are generating leads through newsletters or information forms or downloading a free ebook. Tests should have each potential customer complete the desired action or actions. This will provide invaluable feedback on how easy it is for customers to meet the goal. Any problems can then be corrected before the site is accessible to actual customers.

Moving to a new city means that a lot of things are going to have to change. The first thing that most people start thinking about when they are considering moving is that they are going to have to change jobs. This means searching the web for the perfect place to work. The next thing that most people think about is the fact that they are going to need a place to come home at night, as well as a place to keep all of their stuff. The job isn’t for everyone, but there is at least one job that can take care of both of these problems.

How Direct Selling Can Open Up the Job Market This Summer

There are a number of people out there looking for jobs right now and the numbers only increase with the summer heat. This is because there are a number of programs that only hire people through the school year to take care of kids and the rest of the time they are out. The kids are also out and about getting summer jobs, but there really should be less for them to worry about. For many of the high school kids, a job is not necessary, their parents can take care of them and they are fine if they don’t get a job. On the other hand, adults usually have families and need to take on some kind of job to keep up with house payments and other things.

There is one other type of summer worker whom is not thought of very often, but almost always needs to make money during the summer and has no time for it the rest of the year. That is the college student. This is the time when they need internships and jobs more than ever and unfortunately they have very steep competition. Old enough to be treated like an adult, but without the experience that many of their other adult counterparts have, and with a lot of the same responsibilities as any other student, these summer job hunters have a unique position. Luckily they also have a unique stance in society and there are groups that are looking specifically at hiring them over anyone else, such as The Southwestern Company . NY & Memory

This part of the trip is always the strangest.  Getting somewhere is always hard, because there are all the impossible things that have to happen before.  You leave a place, and it is almost like closing up the little shop that is your life.  It takes a lot of effort to keep that life going, so when you leave it, it almost seems as though it might not be open when you get back, and all the things that were there have changed, and the people you know have decided to move.  So all that you have of that life is what you’re carrying, and at a point you have to look at it and decide that this is enough, this is plenty of material with which to make a new life.

It’s sometimes easier in Manhattan and sometimes not.  There are hotels, to be sure, at this site, and you know that the stay will be wonderful as always.  And in New York, they have everything, so if you decide you don’t have what you need to create a life, you can find materials to keep building.  But that also reminds you that it might be easier than you’d suspected to create your life, and that the years you put into it might have been easier if only you’d known that you didn’t need that much.  So you decide to go to a gallery and see how the other artists are doing this, how they are constructing their lives.

This part is where is becomes somehow magical.  There is a lot to see, and a lot of ideas, and this is exciting, because there are people here who are just like you, and you know that you can do this too.  This is, after all, exactly what you’re doing in your own city.  This gallery has video, and painting, and performance, and this is what you know, too.  At the same time, it’s a small pinch of jealousy that comes in, because you might be here, but you’re not, and the people here seem to be so decided about what they’re doing.  A half of a conversation later, and you start to sense the same fears and doubts that you have, but they’ve decided to continue anyway.  Exactly like you’ve done, and like you’re doing, and in spite of yourself, this is becoming sweet.

Just What is it That Makes Next Day Blinds So Special?

It just goes, that when your company works with the public, in either the service industry or in retail…in any company for that matter, that conflicts will arise that need to be resolved.  Should it happen at Next Day Blinds,  they listen to, understand, and resolve any issues quickly and effectively.  Different personalities are just bound to create different opinions, but a conflict with the customer is not necessarily a bad thing, it is an opportunity to really let your skills in customer service shine.  Growth is the result.

FCPA and the Obligations of Society

One of the doctrines to be instated by the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, FCPA is the policy of Know Your Customer.  This is a set of procedures that outline the ways to go about completing a thorough investigation into the background of a potential client, customer, or business associate. This investigation will “weed out” potential criminal activity and provide a corporation or a financial institution the information necessary to assess the character and the ethics of an entity or an individual with whom they are considering becoming involved.  These are not just policies and procedures to follow, this is the law. In the United States, when a company does follow this and the procedures with due diligence, and a corporation, foreign official, or customer that they are involved with becomes convicted of a crime of corruption, they themselves will be held criminally responsible as well. When one is investigating anything, there are red flags when an aspect is amiss.

When the figures are inconsistent, that is a red flag. When business or financial transactions are inexplicable, that is a red flag.  As stated before, this is not just a duty or a part of one’s job, it is federal law to make note of such red flags, and to take the proper steps in not only discovering the truth, but reporting the findings to the proper agencies of investigation and enforcement.  On the practical level it is just good business sense to not involve one’s self or the corporation in criminal activity.  One risks not only losing their company, but imprisonment as well. On the ethical level , it is just not right to continue doing business with those who fund the activities of terrorists or with leaders whose corrupt actions have a detrimental effect on the people of their country.  And on the legal level, should one be truly innocent in criminal activity, having the proof to back up oneself will be the defense in either an investigation or in the court proceedings that follow.

History of sales training

According to the history known of sales training, John Henry Patterson was allegedly the first person to construct the first ever official sales program.  He was with the National Cash Register Company at the time he made the program.  It was in the later part of the 19th century that he made the program, a program which would become what is the archetype for sales in the twentieth century.  The sales program for the twentieth century functions through its quotas and territories.
 
The scientific fever that held everyone in its grip at the time John Henry Patterson created the program also affected how businesses formed their plans and organized themselves.  He used methods of science to classify and categorize what worked in manufacturing, a process already hugely influenced by the Industrial Revolution.  He also started to create a way of managing campaigns in advertising.  It was all a reaction to the need to make more requests and business for the cash registers he sold. 
 
National Cash Register would later improve these techniques, methods, and to make them even more applicable to businesses.  It was found that there was such a thing as a born salesman.  Extroverted and with a natural ability to speak persuasively and memorize sales pitches, these are the qualities that were being culled then that are natural to the world of sales training now.  But underneath the sales pitch was a more important principle at work.  A product had to be unique enough and substantial enough in its worth that it would help to sell itself without too much effort for the salesman or saleswoman.  Gusto and clarity in speech were the conduit to sell such products.  These were the early days of sales process improvement.
 
As of late, training has mostly consisted of creating salespeople that are self-encouraged to make clear, lucid sales that also consider the needs of the customer so that they make a good sales pitch.  Knowing the customer is a large part of the sales pitch.  However, as customers become savvier and savvier to pitch techniques, a better process must be discovered.

Kinetic Energy Drives the Wind Turbine

Wind turbines are machines that convert the energy of the wind into a form that can be used as mechanical and electrical energy.  The harnessing of the wind has been going on for centuries in many different countries through the simple form of the early wind turbine, the windmill.  Sometimes this energy is used to operate machinery such as a grind stone or a pump.  Other times it is converted into electricity.  This form of energy is useful in the continued efforts to combat environmental issues such as the emission of gases such as carbon dioxide as well as the continued struggle against global warming.  This is done so in a way that still allows everyone the conveniences of the modern lifestyle.

There are two different kinds of wind turbines, distinguished apart from each other by the mechanics of the way in which the blades of the turbine rotate.  Those that operate on horizontally based axis are the most common type, however those rotating vertically are used from time to time.  They are also distinguished by their locations, either offshore, on shore or aerial.  More and more frequently the are being used in combination with solar panels as well.  Those of the horizontal type have a generator, and they must face the wind.  Some have sensors which will move the face of the turbine according to the direction in which the wind is blowing at any given time.  These large towers do produce a bit of turbulence.

Those that are located on the down side of the wind, do not need the sensor, but usually have blades that bend with the pressure.  These are less common than those that are built up-wind.  These are designs that were fist developed throughout Europe and usually have four blades per each turbine.  The early versions of this kind of energy production are located throughout the Netherlands, as well as many throughout the United States, and they have been providing this alternative energy supply for hundreds of years.

How to make a budget

So sitting down and making a budget might not sound like the most exciting thing to do with your free time.  The first thing you do is to gather as much financial information you can for yourself. The more information you have at hand, the easier it will be to write yourself a true budget.  This will help you to see where your money comes from and where it is going. If you can find places where you can cut back to make your money work better for you. Also figure out where your income comes from. If you have a real tally of what you make, it will be much easier to decide how much you should spend.

The next step in creating a fool-proof budget is to write down what you spend your money on. It is best to do this monthly to see where you can cut back. Also you won’t have a feeling like you don’t know how your money is spent every month. Figure out how much you spend on groceries, bills, rent, etc.

Then break your expenses up. What do you absolutely need to spend your money on? Are there any areas that you could spend less? Think about if you really use all of those cell phone minutes or if you should get a new quote on your car insurance. Also look to your food money; do you spend a lot of money going out to eat? Just knowing little things like this can make a world of difference in how you live and spend money.

Meyer Lansky, the Founding Father of Money Laundering

During the 1930′s in the United States, many laundromats were owned by the gangsters in the Mafia.  They made large sums of money, cash, participating in illegal practices such as boot-legging, prostitution, gambling and extortion, and they needed a way to make the money appear “clean”, to appear to have been made legitimately.  They needed to separate their cash from the crimes that they were committing.  Hence the term, money laundering.  Their laundromats were just one of many businesses that were legitimate.  In this way they were able to account the earnings gained from illicit means, claiming their monies came from the business.  One great factor about laundromats, is that they are cash based businesses.  There is yet to be a washer or a dryer equipped with an ATM or credit card machine.  This was a giant opportunity for these gangsters, such as Al Capone, who owned many such businesses.  It was Al Capone’s finances that had him convicted and sent to prison in 1931, not the other crimes, but for tax evasion.

One of the myths behind this American gangster, is that Capone’s conviction is what prompted the activity known today as laundering money.   Transactions take place which literally clean the money made during a crime, launder it.  So in the end it looks to have been made through legal acquisition.  The deals and transfers obscure the source.  Capone had not been taking care of this previous to his conviction, and this sent the gangsters to researching ways that the same conviction did not happen to them.   It was such an obvious way to get caught.

An accountant was hired by the mob, Meyer Lansky.  He found that unless he could come up with a way to hide his assets, he would soon face the same fate as Capone.  Within one year, he discovered Swiss banks and the benefits of hiding his money in them.  He became well versed in the practice of hiding money and is known to this day as one of the most influential and successful launderers in history.  By utilizing the facilities offered by the banks of Switzerland, he created the very first technique, loan back.  His ill gotten gains were disguised as loans.  He later declared them as revenue, and on top of it all, received a ‘legal’ tax deduction.  The term is a relatively current one, first written in newspapers in the U.S. in regards to the 1973 Watergate scandal.  Now it is a global concern, one that is being fought every day, in all countries of the world.

Ideas for Ice breakers in business meetings

Remember when you were a kid in school? Every time you were in a new class most of your teachers would do some kind of ice breaker activity to get to know the class. The exception being that most likely you already knew all of the kids because you had been going to school with them since you were five. So it was never awkward. Too bad it can’t be like that with corporate team building. Whether it be management training or sales training or anything in between below are a few ways to break the ice.

*A great ice breaker for a leadership training session might be asking everyone a time in their life when they first exemplified leadership skills. It could be a good way to lead into conversation topics in the training session.

*For getting to know one another in a business training arena a good idea is to do some interviewing of people in the seminar. Break people off into pairs and give them a set of ten questions that are of neutral topic. After they interview each other tell them to introduce their partner to the entire session. It’s a good way to get to know each other a little better.

*Customer service training sessions and seminars could benefit from an ice breaker where people are forced to talk to a lot of different people in the group. Make up a list of things like find a person born in the Midwest, or a person with at least three siblings. Then let the group loose with the list on this get to know you scavenger hunt.

No matter what type of ice breaker you choose just remember a little planning goes a long way. As long as you get things prepared in advance the ice breaker activity should be a success.

The Pazvrk Rug

I was reading about the history of rugs. During the 1940s a Soviet archeologist called Sergei Rudenko made a remarkable discovery. He was visiting a burial site in Siberia and unearthed what we now know to be the oldest surviving rug – the Pazvrk rug.

The Pazvrk Rug was found frozen in ice. This helped to protect it from the elements and preserved its design and colors. It is assumed to have been produced in the 5th century BC by the Scythians a nomadic tribe from Mongolia using techniques that have been handed down over time and are still in use today. This includes the Ghiordes knot. This rug had on average 200 knots per square inch and shows the sophistication of rug making techniques during this time.

Since this time advances in rug making have expanded the use of rugs, how they are made and an amazing array of different shapes, designs and materials. There are bathroom rugs, stair rugs, indoor outdoor rugs, and so many other uses. Its amazing to think that they all were developed from techniques used so long ago.
