New York Doll: Elina Zavala
New York is a construction. It’s a thing, a metaphor, and an inkling of an idea, and it gets created fresh every single day. There are vast machines at work here, financial, creative, and political, but the most powerful surely is the financial. At least, from the outside, that’s how it would seem, but anyone who’s spent time here has that uneasy sense that it’s more a construction of the people who live here, which suggests that some of this is in our control.
That’s a lot of responsibility. It also makes room a lot of freedom, because it means that actions and thoughts might actually matter. As the days progress, the things that humans do always have the potential to make changes for the better. This might be why we love to see art that turns our heads, because it might have an effect on the world at large.
We also like to see beautiful buildings, wonderful meals, and gorgeous hotels , and New York has plenty of these, offering plenty of wonderful touches to make a visit here a memorable and splendid adventure. Part of the adventure, however, is in being in a city composed of intensely creative people who are making them selves up as they go along, and up and coming stars like Elina Zavala is taking an active part in her own creation, and the results are rather stunning.
Some of her first work in the city was with John Caswell’s excellent Progressive Theatre Project where his play Shots offered heady theatre with a very powerful visual appeal, creating an absurd world gone out of control. She was one of the magnificent actors in the original production, giving her mechanical characters a very intelligent fire.
It’s the kind of fire that can turn someone to salt if you turn around too soon, but with her, you have no choice but to turn. The performances are so extraordinary, and the fire burns so clean, that it leaves the fingers burning with the memory of birth, and the responsibility of creation.
