Backyard perfection

Posted by Ann on July 31, 2009

What make the perfect backyard? Is it several built in gas grills, fully equipped with a grill island for cooking outside on the Fourth of July?  Or is it something else? Like the jet is one of those amazingly relaxing ones that hot tub spas have?  I mean yeah, all that stuff is pretty awesome. But is that what really makes the perfect backyard?

I guess the perfect backyard totally depends on where you have it. In the mid west everyone had a swing set and a trampoline. But, then again we had about an acre of land and a deck. It was all about having space and a place for the kids to play as well as the adults. You just had to make sure you did not get eaten alive by bugs. Mosquitoes are so gross eww!

Now in the Southwest it’s all about having a swimming pool. If you don’t have a pool, you really don’t have much of a yard. If you live in Phoenix and the thermometer’s mercury is climbing towards 115 degrees, there is not much you can do outside except swim. And even then the water is pretty warm.

But really, no matter where you live your backyard is a unique space. It says a lot about you. If you grow a garden or put a basketball court back there, it’s all about making the space work for you and nobody else. It’s important to note that you don’t have to have a bunch of expensive toys to make the most out of your outdoor living area. You just need a little imagination and a plan on how to make it suit your needs.

Create yourself a backyard budget and stick to it. If you have a space that works for you, that’s all that matters.

Steps to Take When Purchasing a Used Vehicle

Posted by Ann on July 31, 2009

When considering purchasing a sports car, many people question whether they should by a new car, or look for a used sports car for sale.  There are many elements to consider when deciding to go with a used car.  Given the fact that new cars depreciate rapidly, a used car is an economically sound option.  And one of the aspects of purchasing a used car is that one may be able to get a sports car that is fully loaded with all the accouterments, something one may not be able to afford to do if one purchases a new car off the lot.  There are some aspects to consider however, that could make the purchase seem risky.  One must fully educate themselves on the car’s history, to make certain that the mileage is the true mileage and that the car was maintained properly by the previous owner.  There are ways in which one can go about the investigation into the history of the car and set one’s mind at ease before signing that check.

There are four steps one may take that will ensure they have done all the research necessary to avoid spending money on a lemon.  The first is research.  This is important.  Compare consumer reports and read reviews on the make and model of the sports car.  Keep the choice between just two or three models so that you are certain of what you want and you can be thoroughly knowledgeable.  Secondly, check the history reports.  This can be done with the vehicles VIN number.  Half of the cars may be eliminated during this step.  Third, make your decision based on the research you’ve accomplished, not based on what the potential seller says.  If you yourself are not familiar with the mechanics of cars, bring someone with you who is well versed.  And fourth, take care with the paperwork.  Make sure you are aware of what you are signing.  Never rely on verbal statements or promises.  These are simple steps to take when deciding on the purchase of a used car, and are well worth the time it takes, for the peace of mind that comes from knowing you got the best deal possible.

How to make a budget

Posted by Ann on July 27, 2009

So sitting down and making a budget might not sound like the most exciting thing to do with your free time.  The first thing you do is to gather as much financial information you can for yourself. The more information you have at hand, the easier it will be to write yourself a true budget.  This will help you to see where your money comes from and where it is going. If you can find places where you can cut back to make your money work better for you. Also figure out where your income comes from. If you have a real tally of what you make, it will be much easier to decide how much you should spend.

The next step in creating a fool-proof budget is to write down what you spend your money on. It is best to do this monthly to see where you can cut back. Also you won’t have a feeling like you don’t know how your money is spent every month. Figure out how much you spend on groceries, bills, rent, etc.

Then break your expenses up. What do you absolutely need to spend your money on? Are there any areas that you could spend less? Think about if you really use all of those cell phone minutes or if you should get a new quote on your car insurance. Also look to your food money; do you spend a lot of money going out to eat? Just knowing little things like this can make a world of difference in how you live and spend money.

When starting a business or just for personal use a budget is an important tool. Businessman Steven Barbarich has to maintain a budget for his internet business and so even does Bill Gates, well maybe not him directly. But the point is everyone should have a budget and should review it monthly.

Meyer Lansky, the Founding Father of Money Laundering

Posted by Ann on July 24, 2009

During the 1930′s in the United States, many laundromats were owned by the gangsters in the Mafia.  They made large sums of money, cash, participating in illegal practices such as boot-legging, prostitution, gambling and extortion, and they needed a way to make the money appear “clean”, to appear to have been made legitimately.  They needed to separate their cash from the crimes that they were committing.  Hence the term, money laundering.  Their laundromats were just one of many businesses that were legitimate.  In this way they were able to account the earnings gained from illicit means, claiming their monies came from the business.  One great factor about laundromats, is that they are cash based businesses.  There is yet to be a washer or a dryer equipped with an ATM or credit card machine.  This was a giant opportunity for these gangsters, such as Al Capone, who owned many such businesses.  It was Al Capone’s finances that had him convicted and sent to prison in 1931, not the other crimes, but for tax evasion.

One of the myths behind this American gangster, is that Capone’s conviction is what prompted the activity known today as laundering money.   Transactions take place which literally clean the money made during a crime, launder it.  So in the end it looks to have been made through legal acquisition.  The deals and transfers obscure the source.  Capone had not been taking care of this previous to his conviction, and this sent the gangsters to researching ways that the same conviction did not happen to them.   It was such an obvious way to get caught.

An accountant was hired by the mob, Meyer Lansky.  He found that unless he could come up with a way to hide his assets, he would soon face the same fate as Capone.  Within one year, he discovered Swiss banks and the benefits of hiding his money in them.  He became well versed in the practice of hiding money and is known to this day as one of the most influential and successful launderers in history.  By utilizing the facilities offered by the banks of Switzerland, he created the very first technique, loan back.  His ill gotten gains were disguised as loans.  He later declared them as revenue, and on top of it all, received a ‘legal’ tax deduction.  The term is a relatively current one, first written in newspapers in the U.S. in regards to the 1973 Watergate scandal.  Now it is a global concern, one that is being fought every day, in all countries of the world.

Get the most out of your home renovation budget

Posted by Ann on July 23, 2009

Home renovations may have taken the back burner in your budget. And making over your home seems like a daunting and expensive undertaking. But you don’t have to spend a ton of dough to change up your home. There are cosmetic things that you can do to make the most out of your budget, until you can afford to re do that old bathroom or purchase some new bedroom furniture.

Something you can think about doing is using paint to give your home a different look and feel. Consider doing this yourself and you can save a lot of money. If you are feeling crafty you should check out some design tips and use painter’s tape to create a custom look. It will look like you paid a professional designer to come in and paint and design something especially for you. Paint freshens up any room and can bring light into a space with the right kind of color combinations. Make it a family bonding experience or invite over some friends for painting and cocktails.

Another way to renovate your home without spending a lot of money is to install new window shades. Next Day Blinds is a good place to start. They have a great website that has tons of choices so you can pre-shop online. Next Day Blinds also has show rooms near the Washington DC area. Next Day Blinds has a great reputation for customer service as well.

Another thing you can think about doing is to purchase some new things for your home. Think about buying some new area rugs or candles. They can really change the mood of a room and make it a lot more inviting. No matter what you decide to do, think about how you can do it on the cheap to make it more affordable. A little bit of design goes a long way.

Home renovations

Posted by Ann on July 16, 2009

Home renovations may be taking a back seat to expenses that are more pressing, say bills and loan payments. Just because people are cutting back, it doesn’t mean you still can’t give your house a mini face-lift. There are a number of things you can do to change the look and feel of your home without breaking the bank. Here are some options for the renovator on a budget.

Give your home a fresh coat of paint. Paint is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to change the way that your home looks. And the best part is you can even change up the look of your house, by only buying a single can. Consider making some accent walls in your home. This can change up the look of your home, but it requires minimal effort because all you have to do is paint one wall. Pick a color that is bold but still goes with the color palette you already have in your home and you can give your home a new feeling in no time flat.

Consider getting new blinds. New blinds are a simple way to update your home and save money on your heating and air conditioning bills. Now that its summertime it is a good idea to consider how much your cooling bill is costing you. By spending a little money on new blinds, you could end up saving money in the long run. A good place to start is Next Day Blinds. Their site is really comprehensive and their variety is top notch. Next Day Blinds can even help you with design issues you may have.

You don’t have to put your home renovation plans on hold. You can get some renovations done and do them cheap. A little bit goes a long way when it comes to doing home renovations. All you need is a little money and some time and do it yourself goals are easily accomplished.

The Influence of Music Lessons in Northumberland Day Schools

Posted by Ann on July 15, 2009

One should take a moment to reflect on how ones world would be different without music.  At parties, weddings, in the car, or cleaning the house.  What if music did not exist?  To paraphrase a quote by Friedrich Nietzsche, if there was no music, then our lives would be a mistake.  In schools today, funding for music education is dropping.  Amazing considering that those in control of the funding and the grants, may perhaps be driving into the office singing along to their favorite tunes on the radio of their motor cars.  Music is important throughout daily life, something that many institutions are finding out, such as the Northumberland day schools, and schools throughout the world.  “Finding out”…it has been documented throughout history, that kids who participate in the arts, particularly music, excel in the other areas of their curriculum.  The effects that the study of music has on the live of the students is undeniable, however money is consistently cut from music programs.  Studies show that an education well rounded is the most effective and the most positive of opportunities that teachers and educators can bestow on the children, the teacher and educators of tomorrow.

The study and the creation of music involves science, mathematics, language and motor skills.  Common formats for essay writing are employed by composers.  Mathematical and algebraic equations are used in musical compositions.  The beats and the rhythms require a knowledge of addition and subtraction.  A gifted composer and musician will capture the mind and the heart with pieces in such a manner.   The overall intellect of a person is enhanced by this study, the practice and this performance.   The benefits of an education that includes music are innumerable.  The quality of acoustics, tone and sound are all being accessed now days, with the aid of technological and digital devices, creating a greater span of knowledge as musicians now are depending on the computer world, furthering their education in other areas.  This is one area of school’s curriculum that provides so much to the other subjects, funding must continue to be provided.

Summer roadtrip

Posted by Ann on July 14, 2009

Okay so the trips you were thinking about taking throughout the world globe, because money is a little bit tighter than last summer. But there is always still the great American road trip. Remember hauling around your stuff with your family in that old station wagon. Well you can recreate memories like that very easily! All you need is a road map and a destination.

A good place to check for destinations that are near you is on the web. Road trips are a great way to take the scenic route and get some family bonding in.

The first thing you do is decide how long you want your trip to be. That will help you decide where you can go in the allotted time that you have. There are also lots of ways to figure out trips that you can make on just one tank of gas.

If a day trip is what you are searching for try going to some local historical sites in your area or a few cities or towns away. Every state has culture that you have probably left unexplored because you were too busy thinking about all the exotic trips you wanted to take across the world map.

Even if you only want to travel in the city, there are probably plenty of museums to explore or sports events to attend that may have never crossed your mind before.

If you are looking to take a week or so off, the options for trips are abound. And the time that you spend together with family and friends getting there is all part of the adventure. So fill up your gas tank and take a little slice of America in. Go visit something odd or crazy or just go eat good food. No matter what, you will spend time with those you love, and that is really what your vacation is about.

How successful is weight loss surgery?

Posted by Ann on July 9, 2009

Weight loss surgery has revolutionized the way people and the world deal with obesity. With more and more people falling into the obese or morbidly obese category according to their BMI, body mass index, weight loss surgery is sometimes the only option for a person.

But how successful is it? Is it worth it to go under the knife, often putting all of your hopes in dreams into thinking that weight loss surgery will be the ultimate fix and answer to your problems?

The answer is that it does very much depend on the patient. Hopefully, weight loss surgery is being used as a last resort option. Weight loss surgery significantly helps patients with their ability to exercise. Where previously a person may have had no range of motion, they now have the ability to move and therefore, get more exercise.

Success in weight loss surgery is defined as losing about 50 percent of the excess body weight or more, and maintaining that type of level for at least five years.

With the cost of weight loss surgery the hope is that is will be quite successful for the patient. Medical tourism abroad based surgery is becoming increasingly popular. No matter what type of weight loss procedure a patient is looking to have, it can cost much less in a country like Mexico. Gastric sleeve cost is much cheaper in Mexico and lap band surgery abroad comes at much more attainable prices.

Keep in mind, no matter what you decide to do or where you decide to have your surgery you need to be informed about the procedure and possible complications that could accompany it.  Being a well informed patient will make you feel more at ease with the process and that much more excited about the results and what the future holds.
