Barcelona’s History
Barcelona has an interesting and diverse history. There are a few different legends and theories attributed to its original establishment, and all of them are interesting and somewhat fascinating in their relevance to its contemporary status. Tourists are often attracted to the numerous cultural, scenic and entertainment aspects of the city, while much of its history can go overlooked. There are two primary legends that surround the establishment of Barcelona. The first one is attributed to Hercules and dates back to 400 years before the development of the city of Rome. The second one is from the 3rd century BC and attributes the foundation of the city to Carthaginian Hamilcar Barca, who was the father of Hannibal. He named the city Barcino after the family name. Both of these legends are interesting and relate to some of the historic landmarks and artifacts findings in and around Barcelona and the region.
Some of the artifacts and ruins from the Roman period are located under the Placa del Rei. Some of the Roman grid laying and city development style is still evident in the layout of the historical center Barri Gotic, or Gothic Quarter. In addition, some of the fragments of the ancient Roman walls have been incorporated into the cathedral. Known as La Seu, the cathedral was commonly recognized as having been founded in 343. Since its early development, Barcelona has seen many conflicts, and been overtaken by various peoples throughout history. This is reflected in its diverse cultural history. Tourists who visit the city today can view many landmarks and icons that relate to the city’s history and foundation, which experiencing this historic metropolis.
