Study of the Ocean, Goa, India
The city of Goa sits along the Arabian Sea. This city is the location for the headquarters of the National Institute of Oceanography. Other centers are in the cities of Visakhapatham, Mumbai, and Kochi. There are thirty-eight different laboratories throughout the world. This particular location was established in 1966. Today it has become one of the largest laboratories for the study of the ocean, and and internationally respected location. Research is focused on the understanding of and the observation of the features of the oceans in this region. More than five thousand projects have been reported over the years, and it has become widely recognized by the universities for the study and the level of research and the impact that this research has made.
More than two-hundred scientists work out of the institute, and many more travel in to participate on projects, staying in the nearby Goa, India hotel district. There are four areas of traditional study of the ocean, physical, chemical, biological and geological or geophysical. Underwater archaeological studies are regularly underway as well. The labs are equipped with state of the art machinery and equipment, and are capable of attending to all the disciplines and research requirements. The institute operates a research ship, that is also so equipped. The library on the grounds is home to the largest collection of journals and books in the entire country of India. The main focus has been on pure research, however, this is applied to world in provided information on the environment, on assessing the impact on the environment and the protection of it. They have provided the insight for the regulations concerning the protection of the ocean and the marine life. Many also come to study at the institute, to work on their research and doctoral projects, making this the largest collection of marine biologists in the world.
